Birte Pedersen
Birte Pedersen, a Norwegian artist, was born in Hamburg in 1951. She has lived in Quito, Ecuador, since 1979. She has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. Her photographs have been published in various books. Fascinated by the sea, the movement of the waves, the tides, the light, and the colors, the artist’s work focuses on natural elements, exploring the details of nature and revealing its beauty. She focuses on natural elements but also on the emotional bond between humans, animals, and the planet. She primarily uses photography but also creates site-specific installations.

“Arriving in Santa Caterina we learnt the story of Renata Fonte. Then by chance we found a pile of pine needles resembling a woman lying against a wall. We were inspired to create work together to commemorate her environmental activism and assassination. We wanted to honour her courage as well as the courage of women obliged to flee across the Mediterranean in the hope of reaching safety”. (Birte Pedersen)
